Dan Mangan Comes Out of Hybernation

Dan Mangan, whose 2007 debut ‘Postcards and Daydreaming’ won wide critical acclaim is back for another round in 2009. First of all you can check out his new website at danmanganmusic.com where you will learn everything I'm about to tell you. If you've decided to stay here and read on anyway Dan also has a new EP on the way, and a number of live dates coming up.

The new EP 'Roboteering' coming in March, and a new full-length album "Nice, Nice, Very Nice" coming in August. Mangan also has an all-star roster of collaborators for the new project(s). The track listing for the EP reads:

1. Robots
2. The Indie Queens Are Waiting
3. Sold
4. Till I Fall
5. Tragic Turn Of Events / Move Pen Move (with Shane Koyczan)

According to an email from Mangan:
The first three tracks are from the upcoming LP and include the fine talents of Veda Hille, Mark Berube and Mark Sasso (of Elliott Brood). 'Till I Fall' is from my earliest demo, re-vamped last year with friend Julian Fane. 'Tragic/Move' is a collaboration of music, lyrics and spoken word with the wonderfully talented Shane Koyczan.
You can hear the first track 'Robots' at the close of the CBC Radio 3 Valentines Day Podcast or on his new website.

A Bookstore Crawl in Ottawa - 14 Feb. 2009

Something that recently came to mind thanks to discussions of the side effects of the transit strike written about earlier was the concept of the bookstore crawl.

I'd never heard of it before, but it seems like a good idea to steal. So I will.

Therefore...

When: February 14, 2009 - Noon to 6 PM

Where: Starting at the corner of Elgin and Somerset in Centretown Ottawa and ending at Nicholas Hoare Books on Sussex Drive, right across the street from the National Gallery and the Peacekeepers' Memorial.

If you want to suggest a stopover, there's a Facebook event listing that you can post to. Also, check out the Ottawa LJ Community Blog if you've an account at Livejournal. Run a search for the title "Bookstore Crawl" once you're there.

Hoping to see you!

Great Lake Swimmers and Kate Maki Spring Tour

The Great Lake Swimmers and Kate Maki are going to kick off a tour in March that will take them through the Atlantic provinces, northern Ontario, the prairies and the west before winding up back in Toronto on April 25.

You can have a listen to the Great Like Swimmers performing live at NXNE on this episode of the CBC Radio 3 sessions it sounds something like this:

As good as the Swimmers are I like Kate Maki better!
"Born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, Kate Maki has a voice as wide and expansive as its moon-like terrain. Her music is “somewhere in the magical realm of Mazzy Star, Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood, and Belle & Sebastian” (San Francisco Chronicle), and "the kind you end up with a crush on and can't wait to play driving down the highway" (Edmonton Sun). When Kate is not on tour, she teaches Special Education, Science, and French to the next generation."

    The New Canadian Street Team

For those of you who don't know I'm something of a supporter of Canadian Arts and Culture. Along with publicbroadcasting.ca I run Facebook group for CBC Radio 3 TV (R3TV), the CBC Radio 3 Sessions (also a page for that one), a group for the new CBC Radio 2, a group for upcoming Events in Toronto (there's a page for that one too) - then there's Friends of the CBC, the somewhat related Save CBC News and the (hopefully temporary) Against the City of Ottawa's Arts Cuts I also run a number of social and political groups but I won't go into that now.

Awhile ago, to address the lack of exposure that many Canadian artists get I started thinking about small things that people could do that would have an impact - things that didn't take alot of time or effort. I created the groups Boost: Canadian Film and Television where once a week (ish) I send out a trailer or clip that people watch and rate (driving up it's popularity on YouTube and making it more visible. Boost: Canadian Music is essentially the same (except I send out music videos).

The latest in this line is Street Team Canada - on this group I'll send out tour dates and people are asked to (when an artist is coming to their city) print and put up a poster or two or three in places they go anyway - work, school, their local pub or coffee house, their bus stop etc., If enough people do that and we can bring a few extra people to each of their shows we can help make touring a little closer to profitable for Canadian talent.

So far the response has been good and there are people who aren't in Canada offering to put up some posters for Canadian artists touring abroad. If you have a few extra minutes a week and a printer - sign up here.

New CDs From Bicycles, Jill Barber and Serena Ryder.

The first shout out on this list goes to the Bicycles for having the coolest CD release party.
"VERY excited. Our second album, Oh No It's Love, will be in stores November 4th. We've been working hard on it for the past year, and we're very proud of it. Run right out and get a copy! We're still finalizing the list but here's who we have so far: Luca Maolini (The Old Soul), Brent Randall, Gravity Wave, Forest City Lovers, Matt Murphy, Sandro Perri, Nick Flanagan (Brutal Knights),$100, Hooded Fang, Laura Barrett, Green Go, Henry Fletcher (Henri Fabrege and the Adorables), Sebastien Grainger. Feist Fall Concert Tour for Charities

Feist is on tour across Canada this fall and is asking for people who attend her shows to bring food, and buy merch in support of three different charities:
"Feist is inviting you to bring more than your Fall coat to her upcoming Canadian tour; unlike many party hosts, she is asking you to bring food. The Feist concert food drive (in tandem with the Canadian Association of Food Banks) will take place at each tour stop along her upcoming 13-city tour. Feist encourages attendees to bring food donations and/or monetary contributions to help benefit their local Community Food Bank. Each month more than 720,000 Canadians access food banks, of which 39 per cent are children. Those who contribute will be rewarded with a chance to win a special prize from Feist.

Feist has also announced that all proceeds from her merchandise sales throughout the tour, will be donated to the following Canadian-based initiatives: CARE Canada, MSF (Doctors Without Borders) and War Child Canada. We will be posting more information on all of these initiatives in the weeks that follow, but please spread the word."

It seems like they just finished a tour but Said the Whale is hitting the road yet again. This time they've added keyboard player Jaycelyn Brown to the mix, which should make for a slightly different sound for the band. Although they seem to be on the road constantly you can also read a bit about the band and their love of home here.
