If You Only See One Live Graphic Novel Bike Opera This Year

Exclaim has called Le Cyc "An interactive coupling of indie-rock and graphic art, Le Cyc, is an earnest, theatrical production, exploring social imbalances from a unique perspective" .

The story of Le Cyc is told in 350 projected illustrations by Dave Willekes accompanied by an 8-piece orchestra made up of Guelph musicians from a variety of Burnt Oak Records projects and bands and lead by vocalist/composer Eihab Boraie. It tells the story of "a surreal bike-powered world where sweeping themes of power imbalances and popular revolution collide with carnival-esque images of dictators whose smart-talking parrots perch on impossibly long mustaches. The hour and 20 minute program combines dark humour and political satire in a compelling story that raises questions about how power is peddled in our society."

You can catch Le Cyk on February 26th at the Starlight in Waterloo, March 6 at the Tranzac, or March 14 at the Brantford Arts Block in Brantford.

Find more info about the production and when and where you might get to see it at lecyc.ca. You can also find some clips from the show on YouTube.

The Legend of Bob Wiseman

Came across this little tidbit in the Guelph Mercury about Bob's forthcoming live album and as the author points out if you can survive as long as an independent Canadian musician as Bob has you're allowed to call your album "the Legend":
"in a lot of ways it makes perfect sense for Bob Wiseman to do it at this point in his career. The singer-songwriter has always occupied a unique place within the Canadian music scene -- even dating back to his time as Blue Rodeo's original keyboardist -- with a visionary approach that has never failed to simultaneously delight and challenge his audience."
Read the full article by Jason Schneider here. If you're in or around Guelph Ontario this saturday Bob will be Playing the Carden Street Cafe with Ian Reid opening.

the Sadies and Elliot Brood Live at Hillside

If you missed this year's (25th annual) Hillside Festival, or if you were there but wouldn't mind reliving a bit of it, on July 26 CBC Radio 2 was there with the tape recorders going and has now posted Concerts on Demand from the Sadies and Elliot Brood.

Habitat Downloads

Last year John O'Regan, front man for the D'urbervilles and sometimes David Bowie impersonator and Sylvie Smith formerly of the Barmitzvah Brothers(current whereabouts unknown) got together. They made an EP and played some shows under the name Habitat and were, for a little while, big, mega rock stars (in Guelph). Habitat is no more, but digital is forever and you can now download some songs from them in the podsafe downloads bit of publicbroadcasting.ca. In case you're wondering the sound is a bit like if the Postal Service was better (but sadly shorter lived).

Download a Bride (or two)

Yesterday I introduced you to Elbow Beach Surf Club part of Guelph's Burnt Oak Collective which you can read about on Wikipedia. Today's addition to the Podsafe Downloads is another member of Burnt Oak: the Brides.

The Brides have, like label mates Elbow Beach Surf Club, have been getting alot of positive attention lately. From Eye Weekly:
Before its recent revival, No Wave was the sound of art-schooled New Yorkers hitching their cart to punk rock’s horse. Queens, Brides’ second EP (their first since expanding from a duo to a five-piece), proves that the historical and literal distance between the Mudd Club and kids in exurban towns like Guelph actually helps.

From Echo Weekly:
Melodies trapped inside the bellowing distortion are worthy of their own merit as Brides have grown considerably since the name change. In addition to doubling their size to a foursome, the band have been writing together more as well as touring often, which has only tightened their sound and the playful aggression
bleeding out of it.
But don't take their word for it download a bride or two of your own and give them a listen.

Some Quick Notes: Toronto, Montreal, Guelph, Saskatoon and China

I'm off to do some volunteer work at the TIFF here shortly, so I don't have alot of time to devote to any of these subjects but quickly..

Montreal is getting reading for the launch of Spacing Montreal. It is a free/pwyc event so if you're available this Sunday, definitely worth checking out.

Guelph's Hillside festival has been over for awhile, but when there's recording equipment around nothing is really completely over (ask Richard Nixon)!
Radio 3 has just released a Special Edition Hillside Podcast featuring The Dears, Angela Desveaux, Shad, Emily Haines and Do Make Say Think so if you were there, have another souvenir, if you weren't - now you can be, kinda.

China is where Saskatoon's The Blood Lines are and while Maygen Kardash reports some trouble getting regular computer/internet time, they will have some tales to tell when they get home.

Toronto ... is still TIFFland - off to plug FWC!
