Fox News Commentator Cancels Edmonton Visit

I'm sure you've all seen the lovely video from Fox by now. After 8 years and 116 (to date) deaths in Afghanistan facing armed insurgents, booby traps, ambush's and suicide bombers the brave people at Fox news decided to ridicule Canadian Soldiers for 'taking a break.' The reality is we're not taking a break, we're leaving - Canada's mission in Afghanistan will soon be over.

Fox News has now apologized for the comments and one of the commentators, Doung Benson, has cancelled an April 2-5 appearance at the Comic Strip in Edmonton. Apparently he needed a break.

Edmonton, by the way, happens to be where Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry is based.

Free Downloads and New Website from Hot Panda

Edmonton's Hot Panda has been compared to everyone from the Talking Heads, to Daniel Johnson, Roxy Music and the Flaming Lips. In truth most writers simply get confused trying to describe the sound. This is probably because the band "...have yet to sit down and have the discussion that goes: "So, what should we sound like?"." Fortunately you don't have to read a bunch of reviews to find out what they sound like.

I'm very happy to announce that Hot Panda has added two songs to the podsafe download section of this site that means that you can download them, listen to them, share them with friends, podcast them and decide for yourself what bands to compare them to, or not.

I'm also happy to announce, on a closely related note, that Hot Panda's new website at HotPanda.ca is now up and running. Their new album, 'Volcano...Bloody Volcano' will officially be released on tomorrow (Feb. 10) and has won wide critical acclaim from MusicOHM, Herohill, Bumpershine, Altsounds and many others.

If you're in or around Edmonton, Alberta on Vanlentines day make sure you catch the 'Volcano...Bloody Volcano' CD Release party with guests the Whitsundays and Rah Rah! The Facebook Event Page is Here!

Drive to Save Al Purdy's A-Frame

I received an email the other day from Lyn at the Edmonton Small Press Association there is a drive on to preserve poet Al Purdy's home, create an endowment and establish a poet-in-residence program. Please take a moment to read the letter below for full detaqils. (Passing this on in it's entirity - minus some personal info that might be misused if published online.)

NATIONAL AL PURDY DAY
APRIL 21, 2009

In recognition of the importance of Al Purdy to Canadian poetry, the iconic symbol of the A-frame to Canadian culture, and in support of the Purdy A-frame Trust, the League of Canadian Poets officially declares APRIL 21, 2009 NATIONAL AL PURDY DAY. We invite all Canadian poets, and lovers of Canadian poetry to host a Purdy Party to raise funds to preserve this important cultural and heritage property.

Al Purdy, the man widely regarded as Canada's first true national poet, died in April, National Poetry Month, in the year 2000. In a way, his death marked the end of a century in which the Canadian cultural identity – under pressure from separatist tensions, two world wars, the rapid development of the mass media and the sensation of being a young nation adrift between older colonial powers and our newer imperialist neighbour – experienced its most profound growing pains. No other poet was as resolute in addressing those pains as Al Purdy. He did so not only by writing about the issues head-on, but also by listening to the people around him, by writing a poetry rooted in the daily life of the people and places of the Canada he knew and loved, from sea to sea to sea. He was writing poems that were relevant to Canadians, and, for over forty years, Canadians listened.

The position of Canadian Parliamentary Poet Laureate was not legislated into existence until 2001, so Purdy never ascended to the office that so many believed he was meant to inhabit. In lieu of any official laurels from Parliament Hill, the League of Canadian Poets created an award to honour Purdy for his exceptional status among Canadian writers, and, just weeks before his death, they invested him with the honorary moniker "The Voice of the Land." It was one of many accolades the poet would receive in his lifetime, and it would be among of the first to follow him, quite literally, to his grave.

The words "The Voice of the Land," along with the insignia of the Order of Ontario and the Order of Canada, are inscribed on Purdy's book-shaped gravestone, marking the place where his ashes are buried in the modest cemetery at the foot of Purdy Lane in Ameliasburg, Ontario near the famous A-frame.

That A-frame house, made out of second-hand lumber and original poetry, became the most famous writer's house in the country. Hundreds of writers and their housemates found their way to Roblin Lake to visit the Purdys and talk about poetry and history while downing beer or wild grape wine. Coleridge and his friends had their lake country, and now the Canadian poets would have theirs. A lot of poetry and prose came out of that hard-to-find place.

To prevent its second-hand wood from ending up on someone's scrap heap, and with the blessing and support of Eurithe Purdy, The Purdy A-frame Trust is raising funds to purchase and preserve the property, create an endowment and establish a poet-in-residence program.

2009 Should Be Hot Panda's Year

One of last year's most talked about bands was Edmonton's Hot Panda. For example:
"Hot Panda is a lot of fun, easy to dance to and just might be the latest big thing, which Edmonton seems to have an endless supply of." - Jam

"Really, Whale Headed Girl is a starter album for a band looking to dig their heels into something firmer but by golly, is it ever a good way to kick things off." - Exclaim

"Comment:Hot Panda may be unsigned for now, but that won't last long. Their particular brand of off-kilter rock 'n' roll that blends elements of early, pre-Epic Modest Mouse, Talking Heads and, dare I say it, Pavement. Those are somewhat generic touchstones, but all very apt. They've already garnered a heap of accolades out west, and it won't be long before Hot Panda fever reaches the rest of the country." - Chartattack

and on and on and on and on.
And all of this is on the strength of an EP.

Now Hot Panda is coming back with the support of a label and with a full album to show off.
"It's amazing how the band can produce so much energy, but not rely on it. Usually bands need time together to find the right recipe and more importantly, time on the road to make sure the recipe is right for them. Hot Panda has already been coast to coast, watching the odometer turn (they are playing here at Gus' Pub on April 24th) and if Volcano... Bloody Volcano is any indication of what’s in store, I don’t see any signs of them becoming dormant." - Herohill
Volcano...Bloody Volcano will officially be available on Feb 10 but the send off for the album will be at the Pawn Shop in Edmonton on Valentines Day. (Regina's Rah Rah will be backing them up, doors at 9 - facebook event page here.) There are also Hot Panda dates coming up at Canadian Music Week, SXSW and a major tour is expected later in the year.

Keep up to date at their Facebook Page, Facebook Group or Myspace.

Can Rock Plaza Central Stay at Your House?

From their Myspace blog: Rock Plaza Central are looking for places to crash during their upcoming western tour. Imagine, while your friends are bringing home CDs and T-shirts, you can bring home the band!
Last time we went out West on tour, we stayed with so many wonderful people. For me, it was probably the best part of it. Getting to know so many of you who like what we do. Any chance anyone would like to put up five musicians again? We have mats and sleeping bags. We just can't handle pets because of allergies.

In addition to the dates on our page, we're also likely to be in and around LA and San Diego in the June 15-16 area, Phoenix on the 17 and Missoula, Montana on June 22. Then back into Canada for what looks to be:

Lethbridge june 23, Edmonton the 24, Red Deer the 25, Saskatoon on the 30, Regina the 31, and Winnipeg July 1, my sister's birthday.

Then I think it's Madison, Des Moines and Iowa City or Chicago?

Please fire me an email at chrisrulesbigtime at sympatico dot ca is you think you can help. Thanks!

Free Secretaries Downloads

Last month I told you about Edmonton singer-songwriter Colleen Brown, when she offered up a few of her songs for our Podsafe Download section. Today Colleen is back, with friends.

Edmonton's the Secretaries, for whom Colleen contributes vocals and plays Bass have four songs for you to download.

If you don't know the band check out this revue From Vue Weekly:
"As anyone who's caught one of its costume-themed, dance-contest-in-the-middle, raucous live shows can attest, despite cramming big rock ambitions into intimate little songs, the Secretaries feel less like a band than an incredibly fun social club that happens to revolve around playing ethereally catchy rock. The band is ready to admit as much, too; from fairly inauspicious beginnings, they've become tight-knit seams, more than willing to admit that the band has become something a whole lot more than a name for the trio."

Free Colleen Brown Downloads

People have had alot of very nice things to say about Edmonton's Colleen Brown. Things like
"Why is this woman not celebrated across the country? Her second album, a stellar collection of rootsy piano-pop tunes, proves she is a national treasure in the making -- along the lines of Joni Mitchell, Anne Murray, Gordon Lightfoot or k.d. lang." Sandra Sperounes, The Edmonton Journal
and like
"Perhaps the mark of a real songwriter shows when some of their best songs can come from the simplest inspirations, or the sparest musical ingredients. Singer/songwriter Colleen Brown seems to have figured that out. Brown has a vibrant, clear, compelling voice and a real gift for injecting vocal dynamics into the way she phrases a lyric." -Roger Levesque, The Edmonton Journal
Now you can see for yourself why they are saying all of these things. Colleen Brown is the latest artist to make some songs available in the Podsafe Download are of the site. If the songs offered there aren't enough, you can also listen to one of her Edmonton Shows at CBC Radio 2's Concerts on Demand if that's still not enough..buy her album, I'm sure she'd be ok with that too.

Mint Records Signs Hot Panda

Just days after signing Kellarissa Vancouver's Mint Records has scored another major coup - adding Edmonton's Hot Panda to the Mint roster.

Mint's latest addtions are, by far, the hottest pandas in all of Edmonton.
"When you get compared, in the same breath, to everything from Daniel Johnson to the Talking Heads, you know you have a sound that's hard to pin down. Since their formation during the particularly chilly winter of 2006, the members of Hot Panda (Maghan Campbell, Keith Olsen, Chris Connelly, and Heath Parsons) have yet to sit down and have the discussion that goes: "So, what should we sound like?". The result is a swath of tunes that sound like anything and everything. Brit pop, gypsy swing, opera solos, Robert Pollard style lo-fi jangles, glammy Roxy Music keyboards, and "melodies that will be impossible to dislodge from your temporal cortex" (ChartAttack), all find their home in the music of Hot Panda... sometimes all in the same song!"

You can, if you haven't already, give them a listen on Myspace or New Music Canada.
