Will B.C. Cut Funds for Touring Artists?
A few minutes ago I got a not in my email that read:
"Music BC has received word that the Music Industry Travel Assistance Program (MITAP) is currently being reviewed by the new Minister and Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, & the Arts. We would sincerely appreciate it, if each of you could send an email or letter to the Ministry expressing your sincere thanks of their support of this program, and that you hope to see it continue for years to come. (Template below) We need to ensure that they know how much the BC music community appreciates having a program like MITAP to reach out to. For every artist/business that has ever wanted to apply, has applied, or has received funding, if we want opportunities like MITAP to exist, now would be a great time to express those sentiments. So if you live in B.C. the template is below. If you don't live in B.C. you might still drop a note and let them know that if B.C. artists don't tour people outside of B.C. will never hear of them AND now that more music is downloaded for free than purchased touring represents a huge part of recording artists income.
Please send all letters and emails to the Minister, Deputy Minister and Cultural Policy Analyst's Office. (Contact info is below) Please CC info@musicbc.org on any emails as well. Thank you so much for your continued support!"
Here is the template they mentioned for people in B.C. : don't forget to cc info@musicbc.org:

Attn: Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts
I wanted to take the time to thank the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, & the Arts for providing the Provincial Music Industry Travel Assistance Program (MITAP) administered on your behalf by Music BC Industry Association. MITAP has helped to grow and sustain the British Columbia music community.
[For those who received money - please state what the money was used for and the benefit]
[For those wanting to access the money - please state what you would use the money for and the benefit from such money]
At a time in the music industry where live performance has become a critical component to an artist's development, I believe that this program is essential. Further, in the new music era, travel expenses for touring, showcases and business travel have been increasingly downloaded onto artists and it is now harder than ever to cover these expenses without some financial assistance.
Often it is the first few tours that are the hardest, but once a following is established, sustainable careers can be achieved from this initial work. MITAP provides that initial leg up that is so vital to moving artists to the next level in their careers and helping to establish that all important fan base.
In order to continue to promote the many talented musicians of British Columbia within and outside of the province, travel initiatives are frequently necessary. Many very successful tours and showcases would not have been possible had it not been for the support received from MITAP.
I understand the new Minister and Deputy Minister are currently reviewing the renewal of the Music Industry Travel Assistance Program for this upcoming fiscal year. I wanted to express my sincere thanks for this program and my hope that it to continue for many years to come.

Sook Yin Lee's Year of the Carnivore in Production
"I'm learning a lot. Normally I make little movies with my friends in our houses, but this is a much larger undertaking, we even have a transportation unit and a preproduction facility with a parking lot attendant who operates a gate! While Sook-Yin may be uncomfortable revealing details some are available at the website of Screen Siren Pictures
I can't yet reveal who the actors are until all the leads are confirmed, but I must say, this cast rocks. My crew is top notch too. After years of writing this story, I can't believe it's actually becoming a reality. I'm excited and I'm scared. It's one of the biggest undertakings of my life. I was talking to my best friend Jooj the other night, when he gave me this simple advice: make something beautiful."
Year of the Carnivore is a bittersweet comedy, a coming-of-age story about a girl with an unrequited crush on a boy who thinks she's bad in bed, so she goes out to get more "experience".More info is available at http://www.screensiren.ca/in-development/year-of-the-carnivore/

Letter From A Veteran
"I'm not sure you would be interested in printing my story, it is a long drawn out series of events that takes a disabled Veteran, who suffers Chronic Pain, and tortures him until he is forced to the Street for Medications and equipment!
I only break the laws that I need too, and don't know if I will end up in Jail in 9 days or not!
My crimes are fully supported by my NDP Member of Parliment, as proven by her Closing My File after begging for help!
This must never happen to another Veteran of The Canadian Armed Forces again!!
My family and I have suffered this torture, at the hands of VAC since my medical release for DND, and have included many different medications and Drugs being denied, Much needed surgeries been postponed or Denied by VAC, RCMP Raids, and Commission Reports, hundreds of e-mailed to MPs. News papers and Union Media!
I still after 4 years buy my PAIN Medication from the street even when I have a Government License to produce my own!
I am a disabled Veteran who may go to jail, and the NDP Party members have to much to lose in Black Marked Drug profit so MY FILE REMAINS CLOSED!
Please look threw some of my My Space blogs, They are all linked to the Government actions taken against me.
This started when Mr C was PM and continues to day!
Yet my NDP MP, closed my file?
Please you tell me after reading my blog that the Disabled Veterans are treated fairly?
TTFN
Bruce Webb"

CRTC Tests 'the N word' (not that one)
Perhaps it is because of recent critisism on issues around media consolidation but the CRTC is experimenting with the word 'No' when it comes to media companies trying to buy more media companies.
According to the Hollywood Reporter
Now if only they could go about saying 'no' retroactively a bit.
According to the Hollywood Reporter
"The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission said Tuesday that the Vancouver-based company may not buy CKIZ-FM in Vernon and CIGVFM in Penticton, both in British Columbia, as the transaction would give Pattison more than two English-language FM stations in the local media market.
"If the Commission were to approve the applications, all of the nine commercial radio programming undertakings serving Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton ... would belong to two operators -- Pattison and Astral Media Radio," the CRTC said in its ruling. "A plurality of ownership in the private element is necessary in order to maximize the diversity of voices in the Canadian broadcasting system."
Now if only they could go about saying 'no' retroactively a bit.

Zina, with an I, Warrior Princess
Zina Warrior Princess is the latest addition to the podsafe downloads. I met Zina at a Xmas party, the 16 year old niece of a friend. She told me that she'd just put her first song up on Myspace and I told her that I'd love to put her first song on the site. Zina has been playing guitar since the 6th grade and this is, as far as I know, this is her first (though surely not her last) recorded effort. Although I hadn't heard it the song before I made the offer, I'm glad I did. It's surprisingly good.

BC Govt. uses Facebook/Myspace to Spy on the Poor
According to the Tyee British Columbia officials are using social sites such as Facebook and Myspace to spy on welfare recipients.
"A message circulated in recent weeks to advocates working with people who receive financial help from the government warns that investigators use the Internet sites to look for evidence of "undisclosed co-habitation (living with someone), spending beyond what is provided by the ministry, casual employment, leaving the province for more than 30 days, gifts, pets and other income."To me this sounds like an excuse for bureaucrats to spend their work days surfing the net and pretend that it is work related.
In each of those cases, the information might affect how much welfare a person could receive, or whether they would be eligible for help at all."
