If you thought that every block of Toronto already had two Starbucks you were wrong. Ok, you were right but with an exception. To date there has been no Starbucks in Kensington Market and this is a problem they aim to fix. Two groups have srung upFacebook have sprung up to try to fight it, although Starbucks has now denied the plan. Large corporations though are certainly not to be trusted based solely on what they say.
I will not urge you though to boycott, or not boycott. Where you buy coffee is up to you. However if generic multinationals insist on crashing all of Toronto's parties then we should at least urge them to treat their employees fairly. Wouldn't you agree? So if you decide to go to Starbucks, any Starbucks, please print some info from this website and take it to them. If you don't go into the Starbucks, simply tape it to their window. With Stephen Harper driving manufacturing jobs out of the country it is time four Canada's baristas to get the protection that only a union can properly provide.
Personally I think that this is the approach that should be taken with multiple corporations all over the city. If Starbucks, or McDonalds, or Home Depot slides their corporate tongue into your favorite neighborhood - unionize the store. Believe me, this will get the companies attention far better than a petition - regardless of how many signatures you get.
