the Burning Hell Baby

The Burning Hell new baby (which is an album, not a child, is due on St. Patrick's day. Mathias Kom says:
"On the feast day of St. Patrick, we will birth our baby! That is, we will release our new album, which is called "Baby". We are not actually delivering a small human person baby. Is this clear?

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy it. If you hate it, that's OK too. Because the world is a rainbow of taste, and you are your very own unique rainbow colour. Regardless, drop us a line and let us know what you think.

With love,
Mathias"
On the off chance that you don't read this blog daily and don't know who the Burning Hell is/are here's a refresher.

And then they start playing and they're all like

So, when St. Patrick's day comes you have to buy it. If you've been adversely affected by the recession there's special pricing (half price and then half price again.)

Burning Hell Video from Sappyfest

Via Zunior TV comes video from Sappyfest 2008 - the Burning Hell starts their show with their standard "The Things that People Make" after a tip of the cap to the vastly underrated Phil Collins work of the 1980s.

Seriously if you get the chance to see them don't miss it. This band is insanely fun.

Boost Music: the Burning Hell

The Boost: Canadian Music and Boost: Canadian Film and Television were created a few months ago to get Canadian music, film and television in front of more eyes. (See the bottom of the post for more info.) Since not everyone wants to join the groups or has a Facebook account I've decided to start posting them here as well so:

A little more for you this week than usual, this is a 6 song 'video ep' of "the Burning Hell" playing live (the live shows are amazing)

Have a look, watch, rate and comment (if you have a YouTube account) at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q07YQb0h1Gg

If you like it, click on the link below to share it on Facebook
http://www.facebook.com/share.php?u=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q07YQb0h1Gg

And if you ALOT join the Facebook Group at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=34590444375

Boost: Canadian Music is a Facebook Group that, once a week, asks people to watch a music video on youtube, rate it, comment on it and share it on facebook if they like it. There is frequently a link to a facebook group, page or other source where people who like the music can find more information or keep up with the band. Canadian artists frequently have little or no money for marketing/promotion - this is a small step to try and help them out by putting their video in front of as many eyes as possible.

Boost: Canadian Film and Television is a similar group, formed for similar reasons that sends out trailers, teasers or clips for Canadian films or television programs.

Happy Holidays from the Burning Hell

Steve McNabb of the Burning Hell and Radio Free Peterborough recently got in touch to let me know about a couple of things.

First of all there is Radio Tarahumara "Broadcasting the Voice of the Raramuri to the World". So who are the Tarahumara?
"For at least 2,000 years the Tarahumara have lived in the mountains of northern Mexico, resisting outside intrusion by retreating, when necessary, to ever more inaccessible territory. In this way the Tarahumara have been better able to retain their traditions than many native peoples in North America.
The past 12 years have witnessed the worst drought conditions on record. The Tarahumara are expected to face another poor harvest this year.
The Sierra Tarahumara, is an immense and diverse region spanning the south and west areas of the Mexican state of Chihuahua. It is home to North America's tallest waterfall, Basaseachi, and also its deepest gorge, Barranca del Cobre (Copper Canyon), which is visited by tourists who ride the Chihuahua-Pacifico train.
Many Raramuri (as they are known in their own tongue) speak Spanish but their native tongue is Raramuri which has a variety of dialects in the region.
The Tarahumara are a native group inhabiting the rugged terrain of the Sierra Madre mountains in north central Mexico. Their original home was on the fertile plains, but they were forced to leave that area for their own survival, and to maintain their culture, several hundred years ago.
The Tarahumara continue to live much as they have for centuries because of their separation and the difficulties in reaching them. They are a people rich in culture, dedicated to their families and extended families, who live in widely scattered collections of small adobe houses or caves.
Their numbers are not well known. It is estimated that there may be up to 130,000 Tarahumara living in over 6,000 communities throughout the Sierra Madre range. Europeans called the tribe the Tarahumara, but the Tarahumara refer to themselves as the Raramuri.
Recent years have been difficult ones for the Raraumuri as a persistent drought has caused repeated crop failures which, in turn, has weakened the population and caused outright starvation in many places.
Please take a moment, if you have one or two and check out the site. The other thing Steve mentioned was the new Burning Hell widget. The Burning Hell, like every other indie band out there still needs to sell albums so .. have a listen, watch the video and think about buying some tunes and if you want your very own widget, check out http://www.wearetheburninghell.com/badges/happy_birthday. Peterborough Rocks

So after I posted the updates to the site yesterday I got a message from Mathias Kom (Burning Hell) about a project that has been going on in Peterborough for a few years now Radio Free Peterborough. From RFP's about section:
Radio Free Peterborough is an all volunteer-run Internet Radio Station that features only the music of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.
RFP also aims to be a cultural heritage resource for music that falls below the radar of the commercial music industry, but still sounds great. Especially when you know everyone you're listening to.
We want you to start your own radio station, so go grab a copy of our D.I.Y. Internet Radio document. It's free, and so is everything you need to get started. If you have a windows computer on a fast connection that can play music, you're already most of the way to being a radio station.
RFP has spawned similar efforts in Wakefield, Quebec and Chihuahua province, Mexico. If you'd like to read their DIY Internet Radio document you can grab a copy at http://www.radiofreepeterborough.ca/pdf/diy.pdf.

Anyway, I decided that any city that could spawn RFP had something going on so there is a 31st city included on publicbroadcasting.ca now http://www.publicbroadcasting.ca/city/peterborough.html. It's a bit sparse at the moment, but I'm sure someone will come along and tell me what else should be in there.

One of the Best Toronto Shows This Year

Last night marked one of the most highly anticipated concerts of the year in Toronto. In order to accommodate the throngs that were expected a large number of people were suckered into going to see Radiohat (? something like that - British act I think) at the Molson Amphitheater at 80 bucks a pop while the real show went down at the tiny Ranch Relaxo. After the Skirt Chasers warmed up the crowd it was down to theatrical and entertaining performances from The Burning Hell and Hank Frost and Lilly Pine.

Burning Hell managed to squeeze 9 people onto the stage including their newest band member, Canada's greatest emerging bassoonist (who will be born sometime next month - I'll edit this later and put in his name once he has one.) They threatened at various points to upstage Hank and Lilly with everything from standards like "I Love the Things That People Make" and "Grave Situation" to covers of "Pop Goes the World" and "In the Air Tonight" (sort of).

However, not to be outdone by unborn bassoonists, Hank and Lilly broke out with a ringer. They were joined on stage by fellow Victoriaite (if that's not a word I get full credit for inventing it) Carolyn Mark and ripped through a set of musical theatre that answered that nagging question: 'If the cast of Midsummer's Night Dream formed a band with Johnny Cash and Darth Vader what would it sound like ??"

Ultimately a beautiful, fun and entertaining night of music. If you were the unfortunate folks who ended up laying out a small fortune to go see Radiohat my apologies, there just wasn't enough room at the Rancho for everyone.

Free Downloads from the Burning Hell!

Mathias Tom's the Burning Hell is the latest addition to publicbroadcasting.ca's Podsafe Downloads. Feel free to give a listen and pass it around so others can do the same. You can find more from the Burning Hell at wearetheburninghell.com.

From I(heart)music.net
"Led by Mathias Kom, the band is a strange mix of gospel, folk-ish rock, gorgeous country and...well, whatever you'd call all that mixed with ukulele. It's certainly like very little else out there, and it's easy to see why weewerk loved Kom and his band enough to sign them and release their new album early in 2008. When that one comes out, the expectations created by Tick Tock guarantee that it'll get thrown on my stereo/iPod right away."
